Enteric CoatingWhat is Enteric Coating?Enteric coating is a barrier that controls the location in the digestive system where it is absorbed. Enteric refers to the small intestine, therefore enteric coatings prevent release of medication before it reaches the small intestine. Enteric coatings provide a stable surface that can withstand highly acidic conditions like those found in the stomach, but breaks down rapidly under less acidic conditions. Materials used for enteric coatings include fatty acids, waxes, and shellac as well as plastics. Omega 1000EC and Enteric CoatingThe enteric coating in Omega 1000EC protects the fish oil from the stomach acid and breaks down in the small intestine. Fish oil is sensitive to heated and acidic environments and can lose its effectiveness if it is broken down prematurely in the stomach. Omega 3 fatty acids have delicate carbon bonds that can be broken in the stomache releasing hydrogen gas causing fishy burps. What is even more important to note is that once these bonds are broken, the omega 3 has been chemically denatured into something different. | ||
